Excellent Guided Tour of Pompeii with an Enthusiastic Archaeologist Our family of four joined the Pompeii Skip-the-Line Guided Tour with an Archaeologist on December 11th, and it was an unforgettable experience. The tour was led by Teresa, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable archaeologist who brought Pompeii to life with her stories and insights. Walking through this UNESCO World Heritage Site, we were captivated by the history of the city that was tragically buried by a volcanic eruption yet beautifully preserved over centuries through the work of dedicated archaeologists. Teresa shared fascinating details about daily life in ancient Pompeii—offering a glimpse into the past that felt both enriching and immersive. The tour was well-paced, engaging, and truly educational. We left with a much deeper understanding of Pompeii’s history and appreciation for the preservation efforts that allow us to witness this incredible piece of history today. This is a must-do for anyone visiting the region! Highly recommended for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious to learn more about life before the eruption.

We took the guided tour with my father in July. I have nothing to say, it was great. The guide was very competent. We got to the strategic points of the site and avoided the crowds. I think our guide's name was Francesco. It was a great experience and I recommend it.

The place is extraordinary. Pick-up for the guided tour was easy. The meeting place was well signposted and our French-speaking guide was perfect, providing accessible insights and punctuating the tour with anecdotes and humor, with a thorough knowledge of her subject. We're delighted, and recommend opting for a guided tour to get the most out of the site. We followed our guide's advice and went to the archaeological museum the next day, which completed the visit perfectly. It's very good to do it in this way, it offers a good logic. Thank you very much.

Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about Pompeii. Her english was fantastic. You could tell she had tailored it to the age ranges of the audience, she was mindful of potentially innappropriate content of the tour and advised parents accordingly. Would highly reccommend!

Went first thing in the morning, 0900. The crowds were negligible. It wasn't empty, but it was easy to take good pictures and get close to the things you wanted to see. Our guide was amazing. She managed to keep my five years old interested throughout, even to the point that he got upset his ear piece kept falling out. That my only critique, and not of this tour or the guide. The head phones provided is a single ear piece without foam or rubber to help hold it in place. It's like the original ear bud and those aren't very one-size fits all. Bring your own head phones for anyone under 12 or so.

We had a mix up with the day of our visit, we thought it was a day later. They called us to let us know we were wrong. They moved our visit an hour later, they waited for us, because we were late arriving from Naples. The guide, Humberto, a Number One!!!!! He gave us the tour of Pompeii, totally great. We learned a lot, super nice and friendly, and very informative and knowledgeable about the city. We loved Pompeii. We thank you !!!!!!!

Bit confusing understanding where to get the tickets finding out the ticket office and meeting point was upstairs. Maybe for improvement a better sign saying pre-booked tickets and tour meeting point upstairs? We also had to start the tour with a walk to another place to get our headphones, that ended up not working anyway and wasting time during the tour doing this. Maybe there is a way of getting the headphones when getting the tickets? It was annoying that we waited for two couples (4 people) to join in the tour lat, while it had already started and we where walking close to or inside the site. It took about 20 min from the tour. The biggest issue though was that serveral of the headphones broke down for people, around 6 people or something, including me during the tour. The guide had run out of spares and the end. Besides this - the guide was very professional, talked slow and clear and the information she delivered was great!

The ticket, bought in advance through Headout, not only did not allow us to pass in front of others, but we acquired it by standing in line at the ticket office, and if we had bought it there it would have cost less. Having studied the subject a priori and seeing it in reality was an intense experience, the ancient roadway with carriage marks, the spaces of the house where you can recognize the structure of the Roman domus, recognize kitchens and bakeries ... and the bodies in their last postures. We really enjoyed the excavations! The problem we had with the audio was that it was a cell phone. This meant that when I wanted to take photos with my cell phone, I always had two cell phones in my hand, which was very inconvenient! At some point we stopped using the audio. We really could have saved ourselves the money. I had imagined that the audio would have been in the form of headphones, which would have simplified things (including the settings).

It was easy getting the tickets from the ticket office. It was a 1 min walk from there to the Pompeii Scavi gate. The agents will try to talk you into getting a tour guide but if you arent really a history buff, you can just DIY it. We went straight towards the ampitheatre, stopping at some interesting houses, the new excavation site, and was able to finish in 2 hrs. We could've gone around more but it rained really hard so we gave up. We really didnt use the audio guides too so it was a waste of money for us.

Pompei is very interesting and worth recommending. The entry procedure was a disaster. First we had to wait at the Tempio Travel office for the tickets with QR code. The Tempio Travel staff were very nice. When the tickets were finally there, we thought that these were the tickets for the entrance. Nothing there. We had to queue for about 40 minutes for a personalized ticket at the ticket counter. We had to show our IDs, but they were left at Tempio Travel as a deposit for the audio guide. Luckily we can speak Italian and after a lot of complaining we were able to identify ourselves with our driving license. But that wasn't the end of it. We had to show our ID again at the entrance. After refusing and protesting vehemently, we were let in. If this is the online fast-track entrance, then we wonder what it's like when 20,000 people visit Pompei every day. The staff are already totally overwhelmed with just a few entries and we still don't understand what all the fuss is about.

The ticket, bought in advance through Headout, not only did not allow us to pass in front of others, but we acquired it by standing in line at the ticket office, and if we had bought it there it would have cost less. Fortunately, there were not so many people, and Pompeii's excavations are outstanding....

It is impressive to see in person how deep the city was buried and how far from the sea. That the skeletons were found on the jetties is very impressive. Finding the works of art that decorated the houses, frescoes, mosaics ... statues is a marvel.

Having studied the subject a priori and seeing it in reality was an intense experience, the ancient roadway with carriage marks, the spaces of the house where you can recognize the structure of the Roman domus, recognize kitchens and bakeries ... and the bodies in their last postures. An unforgettable experience!

Incredible experience visiting Pompeii, we had a decent amount of time to explore the ruins on our own as we didn't have the guided tour. The guide (Marcus) who took us from Rome to Pompeii and back was very friendly, talkative and knowledgable, on the journey to Pompeii telling us about the history of the area and places we were going past. At our brief stop off in Naples he came over to me and chatted about Vesuvius and the surrounding area pointing things out to me.

Excellent transportation, a 10 to the driver who was at an excellent speed and attentive to the road. Excellent guide, Katy. Very friendly and attentive to the group. The only drawback, the service area where they stop to "have a snack", charges 3 € for the cappuccino, when I know, that in bar, you can not charge me more than 2 €. And the paninis, very expensive. Little time in the ruins of Pompeii to go to a viewpoint in Naples that was out of the question. If I want to see Naples, I travel to Naples, I wanted the most hours in pompeii. But it was nice and safe bus transportation. It was appreciated because of how they normally drive in Italy.

It was amazing what our Pompeii tour guide managed to teach us in 2 hours but it was much too short for such a large site. I would skip the Sorrento aspect (if you're travelling in Winter) as it was very quiet and would recommend you to do a full day at Pompeii instead.

We had an incredible day trip with our two children (6 & 8 yrs old). The Amalfi Coast was breathtaking, with a beautiful whistle stop in Sorrento and an enriching tour in Pompei, which the kids enjoyed as much as the adults. A highlight of the tour was our knowledgeable and engaging tour guide, Antonino from City Wonders; a week later and we're still talking about the stories he shared with us! Julio our bus driver was also great and went out of his way to entertain the kids! We highly recommend doing this tour.

Fantastic experience in Pompeii and Sorrento. Our tour guide Heather, driver Francesco, and the guide at Pompeii Antonio were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Great recommendations on how to spend free time in Sorrento. Pompeii was a lot bigger than we were expecting - the tour was wonderful but you do miss out on quite a few areas simply due to having limited time.

Their energy was fulfilling and the care and safety were top level! Thank you so much and wish you all the best! Ramona&Valeriu I

Bus driver and guides were excellent throughout. We started off in Rome and made our way along the Amalfi Coast towards Sorrento, with a couple of stops on the way for some Limoncello and chocolate tasting while the driver has a break. We had lunch in this beautiful resturaunt in Sorrento overlooking the sea. The only issue I had with this trip is that a couple of travellers on the tour were 30 mins late in coming back to the bus meeting point after lunch, therefore we lost 30 mins in Pompeii, which only gave us 1 hour in Pompeii and it was very rushed as you need more time than an hour to fully experience Pompeii. It's a shame that other travellers can ruin the experience for everyone else by not paying attention to the meet up times states by the guide but it is what it is.

The stops were great. Free time in Sorrento was great. The guide in Pompeii was excellent. So knowledgeable, had lots of stories, showed us a few key points rather than running us through. The main issue, that made the day quite uncomfortable, is that there was no bathroom on the bus. The total trip was 13 hours, 4 was spent at Pompeii and Sorrento (including limoncello stop), and about 1 hour for bathroom stops. That is still 8 hours in a bus with no bathroom. I would not recommend this tour for that reason alone.

Laura was an excellent guide. She was very helpful, had the best tips, taught us about the history of the didferent places we passed by and also showed us some local songs. The tour guide at Pompeii was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour enjoyable. I highly recommend joining this daytrip. It was also interesting to visit the limoncello factory on that day. I would just recommend people to do some research before Sorrento, so that you know what to do during your free time.

The places visited and the local guide in Pompeii, very clear and friendly in their treatment. Not like the tour guide, we knew it was in English language that we understand, but we do not speak fluently, the guide Maria Helena, did not try by any means to understand or understand what we needed, another person on the tour spoke 3 languages and she understood us as well as the English speaking passengers, but the guide did not, she had no will for that. At the same time, on the return trip we had a delay of more than 1 hr, because the guide did not give us the schedule and the pick up point, 6 passengers had to take a cab to the bus.

The ticketing experience was fine and the reminder with information about the trip was helpful. We loved how knowledgable our guide Michele Lamberti was and how well he was able to provide context for the sites. Now- less positive feedback is that one of the us seats was seriously broken and the passenger in front of me had her head in my lap because of the broken seat. Also, two of the people on the bus where extremely rude and took our seats and we would have appreciated the guide stepping in and asking people not to"steal" other people's seats.

I was very interested to see the preserved buildings and to hear about the ways of life of citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum. BUT I did not experience our visit in the way others have told us they responded to their visits. They talked of remains of people in the act of fleeing. I believe we missed seeing some interesting aspects of Pompeii (maybe in underground areas). Our Pompeii tour lasted only one and a half hours. Our guide spent too much time telling us about penises and brothels. We'd have enjoyed hearing about individuals and their histories: the guide could have given us a much better idea about the absolute tragedies in many families. He didn't seem caring or affected by the awfulness of it all. We'd have liked much longer there -- but of course we could have limited ourselves to a whole day at Pompeii, so the fault is partly mine!

The group was too big and I didn't see everything I had expected to see in Pompeii, in particular I had expected to see more scenes cast in plaster. The guide was very nice, but the group was also too big with around 30 people and I felt I should have chosen a smaller group. I didn't have any problems with the audio guide, but I had to tick something so that I could send the evaluation.

Our guide was Sergio, from Askos Tours; a very knowledgeable and friendly archaeologist. It was my first time in Pompeii and Herculaneum. In general, the experience was good - well-guided, but with headsets that allowed us to view things in our own time and not always stick close to the guide. The guide's Italian accent was a little heavy, so I wasn't always sure whether other guests (including my kids) were able to follow what he was saying, especially when he used Italian names for mythological characters that the general public might not know as well to begin with. I also can understand how one guest in our group was confused about the initial meeting place - while I was able to figure it out, it could have been made even clearer, perhaps in direct communications from the tour operator to all the guests.

Pompeii | Preserved ancient Roman city frozen in time

Pompeii was a vibrant blue-collar town until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 covered it under a thick carpet of volcanic ash and reduced it to ruins and debris. Today, what is left of the ancient city of Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a unique window into the daily life of a bustling Roman city. Discover the secrets of Pompeii, learn about its history, and find the perfect ticket for an unforgettable journey into the past.

Things to know before buying Pompeii tickets

  • If you're booking a standard entry ticket, then it's best to purchase a map/information brochure so you don't miss out. The signages and explanations are neither evenly distributed throughout the ruins nor are comprehensive enough. Another alternative to the standard ticket is booking the audio guide tour with Pompeii Tickets with Audio Guide for a more insightful experience. Choose the commentary among Italian, English, French, Spanish or German.
  • Do ensure your ticket covers all the attractions within Pompeii, as some tickets (like the standard entry ticket) doesn't offer access to some highlights like the Villa of the Mysteries.
  • Want to really get the most out of Pompeii? Go for a guided tour! Not only will you skip all the guesswork and learn valuable insights, but you could also find yourself in a cozy group of fewer than 15 people if you opt for the small-group tour. And here’s a fun bonus — we’ve got guides speaking everything from English and Spanish to French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and now Japanese and Chinese (Traditional)!
  • If you want to enhance the site experience further, consider booking a tour guided by an archeologist. Their expertise will help you gather information beyond the ruins to their preservation, composition, restoration and more. You can check out this ticket if you wish to take this tour.
  • Book combo tours to Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum for a more comprehensive understanding of the region's history and the impact of the 79 AD eruption. Combo tours are also cost-effective; it works out to be cheaper if you have a single ticket as opposed to buying individual entry tickets to each of these attractions.
  • Got a full day? Make the most of it by booking day trips from Naples or Sorrento. Catch not only Pompeii but also Herculaneum or Mount Vesuvius (depending on your ticket option) and get everything covered — from transport to availing a guided tour.
  • In Pompeii, ongoing excavations and preservation efforts mean that some areas might unexpectedly open or close. Some buildings might also be visible only from the outside. Keep tabs on this information so you know what to expect on your tour.
  • Pompeii tickets are nominative, meaning you need to provide the full names of all guests while booking. Ensure the names provided at checkout match your ID cards for a hassle-free entry.

rules in Pompeii

  • Valid tickets are required for entry; if there are any issues, please report to security.
  • Follow on-site rules: no littering, respect artifacts and no disruptive behavior.
  • No professional recording equipment allowed without permission.
  • Dogs over 10 kg aren't permitted, except for service dogs with a disability certificate.
  • Criminal offenses include damage, refusal to show documents, threats and indecency.
  • Violators face administrative penalties and removal from the park.
  • Groups must follow designated paths; max visitor limit is 15,000 at a time.
  • Visitors with mobility issues or health concerns should take caution due to the vast space and uneven terrain.
Pompeii tickets
  • Read up on Pompeii's history beforehand to enrich your visit. Understanding its significance enhances the experience.
  • Plan to spend at least 3 hours in Pompeii to explore comfortably. Rushing through might lessen the experience. Setting aside a full morning or afternoon is advisable.
  • That said, balance your time at Pompeii to avoid 'ruin fatigue' — tours typically last 2-4 hours, striking a balance for an informative and enjoyable visit, especially in the intense summer heat.
  • Stay alert for pickpocketing, notably around the train line linking Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Naples. Also, exercise caution around the site's entrances as some businesses might offer deceptive information or aggressively promote their services.
  • Choose the entrance based on your needs. Porta Marina offers more facilities, while Piazza Anfiteatro is ideal for independent exploration.
  • Wear comfortable attire, bring water, wear sunscreen, and choose appropriate footwear for a comfortable visit.
Friends at a restaurant

Pompeii Scavi Café: This is the only restaurant within the walls of Pompeii, allowing visitors to refuel during their visit. However, it tends to be on the pricier side.

If you want to instead visit an eatery outside the ruins, here are a few options for you:

  • La Cantina di Plinio: Take a short walk to the La cantina di Plinio, where you can enjoy some delicious pasta.
  • Ristorante President Pompei: Enjoy a range of cuisines including Italian, Neapolitan, Campania, and Southern-Italian, with special diets catered for such as vegetarian-friendly, vegan options, and gluten-free options here.
  • Sofì: You can enjoy some great cocktails and live music at this dinner and DJ bar.
